5 Signs Your Electrical Panel Needs an Upgrade
Panels have a service life. If your home is 30+ years old and you've never touched the panel, here's what to watch for.
5 Signs Your Electrical Panel Needs an Upgrade
Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's power system. Like any working part, it wears out — and unlike a failing faucet, a failing panel can start a fire.
1. Frequent breaker trips
Breakers trip for a reason, but if the same one trips weekly there's either an overloaded circuit or a breaker at the end of its life.
2. You have a Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or similar panel
Certain panel brands from the 60s–80s have documented failure rates. A qualified electrician can identify yours in seconds. If you're unsure, ask.
3. Flickering lights when appliances start
Lights dim briefly when the fridge kicks on? That's normal. Lights dim every time or stay dim? That's a panel or service feed problem.
4. The panel feels warm
A panel should be room temperature. Warmth means a loose connection burning energy as heat — the exact scenario that precedes a panel fire.
5. You're adding a big load
Planning an EV charger, pool, hot tub, or addition? Most older 100A panels are already near capacity. Adding load without upgrading first is a code violation and a safety risk.
What an upgrade involves
A typical residential panel upgrade takes one day, requires a permit and inspection, and often includes a service feed upgrade from the utility. We handle the permit, the utility coordination, and the inspection.
